KHUR, Bangladesh (AP) — The new scores released Friday by America’s most rigorous state tests show the deepest declines in math scores since 1999. The state scores of 3,853 students dropped to 3,632 points in math, well below the 3,768 who took the state’s most recent math assessment last spring.

A report from the Education Department shows the new scores also saw big drops off in reading and writing. The state reading score dropped from the previous year to 594, and the writing score dropped from 3,862 in the 2018 test to 3,749 last year’s score. State scores are compared with a baseline year, when the students’ knowledge and skills were the same as the year before.

For the 2018 spring SAT, scores dropped 2,811 points, well below the 2016 point score of 7,841. That’s the lowest score in the five-year history of the test when it was first administered.

There was also a big drop off in the ACT test scores, with scores plunging a whopping 17 points last year to a score of 27, a drop of 1,931 points from the previous year. The ACT declined a total of 15 points from the 2016 test, when it was first administered.
