‘So many bodies scattered everywhere’: Shocking scene where 25 sheriff’s recruits were hit while running away from a shooting near the Texas border
Aerial footage shows the dead, including 10 children, at the scene, while the video of the incident captures the chaos as deputies swarmed the trailer park.
At the time the video was taken, one of the sheriff’s deputies had his hand on the barrel of his rifle and the others were dressed in body armor.
Deputies say they attempted to enter the trailer park but were blocked by a barbed-wire fence.
Witnesses say at least 26 people died in the shooting.
According to the sheriff’s office, 23 of those killed were members of the sheriff’s “team”, and four victims were “non-deputies”.
The agency released few details amid the investigation, which has been ongoing for more than a month.
The National Sheriff’s Association has called the shooting “a tragedy that is still unfolding” while the sheriff’s office told CBS News they are not releasing the incident report, citing the ongoing investigation.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Texas governor Greg Abbott has ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff and the Texas State Capitol to have a moment of silence for the victims.
According to the sheriff’s office, the gunman was arrested on April 1, and the case is currently being investigated by a joint grand jury.
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick had said at a press conference, “There are a lot of questions that we have answered. Now it is time for the people of Travis County to understand the answers.”
